6th Grade Residency – Storytelling Arts

Each 6th grade Language Arts Literacy class  met with the storytellers (teaching artists) for the first of three sessions. Working with the theme of Creating Community, students and teachers will experience the unique Art of Storytelling through listening to a variety of tales based in the oral tradition. Students will explore personal and social connections to these tales through discussion, creative drama, and writing. Through discussions of and interactions with story archetypes, symbols, and motifs, students will recognize the multilayered meanings inherent in folktales and myths. Teachers will be exposed to a new set of skills they can use to enhance literacy instruction and to create classroom community.

A Morris Arts residency, made possible through a generous $7,000 grant from The Countess Moira Charitable Foundation through Storytelling Arts Inc., as well as support from the Morris Educational Foundation and the FMS HSA
