mackeyThe Morris School District Board of Education tonight appointed West Morris Mendham Regional High School District Superintendent, Mr. Mackey Pendergrast Superintendent of the 5,700-student K-12 Morris District, effective July 1.

While introducing Mr. Pendergrast to the public, Dr. Peter Gallerstein, Vice President of the Morris School District Board, observed, “Mr. Pendergrast is a creative and visionary educational leader recognized nationally for technology innovation. He believes that every child can succeed and is committed to ensuring that all children have the opportunity to do so. We are delighted to welcome him to our district and confident he will lead our schools to great heights.”

In November 2014, Mr. Pendergrast was among one hundred superintendents from throughout the nation honored at the White House by President Obama for leadership in technology innovation. He also was one of only twelve superintendents chosen nationwide to contribute to the creation of the 2015 National Educational Technology Plan.

As Superintendent of West Morris Regional High School District, Mr. Pendergrast directed comprehensive writing initiatives that lead to dramatic improvements in reading and writing for all students. Under his leadership, WMRHSD expanded their Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs and significantly improved student participation and achievement in college level courses. A Career Academy, which incorporated new designs and learning opportunities for all students, also was introduced under Pendergrast’s watch. The Career Academy offers dozens of novel classes in the areas of STEM, Information Technology, Life Sciences and Business Management.

 A lifelong resident of Mendham, Mr. Pendergrast taught History for 15 years in the Summit Public Schools and at Mendham High School. He was a Guidance Counselor, K-12 Social Studies Supervisor, and Director of Staff Development before becoming Superintendent of West Morris Regional High School District in 2012. A graduate of Drew University (1988) he received a M.A. in Education/Counseling from William Paterson University (1992) and a M.A. in Educational Administration from the University of Massachusetts (2008).

The Morris School District Board of Education began a search for a new Superintendent of Schools following July 1, 2014 retirement of former schools chief, Dr. Thomas Ficarra. Ficarra was at the helm of Morris School District for twelve years prior to his retirement. Ms. Catherine Mozak has served as Interim Superintendent since that time. The Board of Education contracted the New Jersey School Boards Association to oversee the superintendent search process. Via online surveys and through a series of forums and focus groups, teachers, administrators, parents and community members provided input that formed the profile of the ideal candidate for superintendent.

Nancy Bangiola, a member of the Board of Education and superintendent search committee noted, “We identified several highly-qualified candidates for this position, but Mr. Pendergrast brings the experience, personal characteristics, innovative thought and educational vision our constituents identified as essential. We are thrilled to have him join our community and look forward to working with him.”During a brief reception following his appointment Mr. Pendergrast observed, “The Morris School District has a proud history and a uniqueness unlike any other community I know. There is a collective energy and a vitality of spirit in this community that directly translates into a progressive, dynamic visionfor its schools. I am fortunate have to this opportunity and eager to begin.”
